Fantasy is a type of speculative fiction that makes use of imaginary places, peoples, or ideas. It usually includes some type of magic. It differs from science fiction in that this magic is impossible in real life (at least without the use of advanced technology that does not appear in the story).

The majority of contemporary fantasy is high fantasy and inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Fantasy stories often include imaginary creatures such as dragons or unicorns, imaginary races or species such as elves, dwarves, and vampires, imaginary worlds and peoples, and magic. It may take place on another planet or include aliens if magic is included, but this often blurs the distinction between science fiction and fantasy.
